Gary G. ★★★★★ This is the second time I have used W. Uden & sons, Bexleyheath and they looked after both my parents in a caring and professional manner. I have nothing but praise for this family run Funeral Directors.Maria S. ★★★★★ Best funeral directors out there!W. Uden and Sons were amazing from start to finish (shout out to Jason, Adam, Lee, Bailey, Spencer and our fantastic celebrant Leo). They felt like an extension of our family - supporting us every step of the way through such a difficult time. We honestly can’t praise them enough. Losing mum at such a young age was soul destroying and quite frankly, I wasn’t ready to let go (like most people) and ‘feared’ doing all the funeral stuff simultaneously in such a short timeframe. This ‘fear’ went away when we appointed W. Uden & sons. We trusted them wholeheartedly and they truly captured mum like no one could on the day itself. It’s also worth mentioning we had a set of challenging requests and yet the team managed all effortlessly.1. Arranging a funeral service 2-3 weeks after passing due to family members leaving the country beyond this (please bear in mind that it normally takes 2-3 weeks to register a death so this was impeccable timing).2. Arranging mum to be collected ASAP (she was 2.5 hours away) so the family had plenty of time to see her before the funeral.3. Liasing with the hospital to collect mum earlier than the norm.4. Allowing 1-1.5 hours nearly every day from when they collected mum to the funeral day to allow us to visit mum in there quaint and peaceful chapel (of which the makeup on mum was stunning! Everyone commented similarly).5. We requested family members carry the coffin on the day itself.6. We requested an ‘upbeat’ tune on the car journey to the crematorium and shout out to Bailey for letting us sing mums favourite song ‘Build me up buttercup’.7. Collecting mums ashes in out of office hours.8. Arranging the witnessing of the charge after the service.Everyone on the day echoed what the family already knew- how fantastic the team and day was. We truly felt like mum was with us and this was all down to this team right here.As an added bonus (and I couldn’t not mention), all the guests were in awe of how handsome the team were carrying mum and giving her the final goodbye - we know mum would have been in her element too! ;)Thank you again from the Smith family 😃Michael C. ★★★★★ We attended the funeral of our dear friend Lyn Gentry at Eltham Crematorium on 30th July 2025. Everything was handled with great dignity and professionalism, and we want to thank Uden Funeral Directors for their care.It was especially moving that Lyn’s family were able to carry her coffin with such love. The funeral director leading the cortege was immaculately presented, and his smart appearance, calm composure, and use of the cane gave a sense of tradition, respect, and solemnity that set the perfect tone. His actions were proud yet sensitive — exactly what our friend would have appreciated.Having seen some unfair comments in the press, we want to say clearly that what we witnessed was the opposite: nothing ostentatious, only dignity, honour, and deep respect. We are very grateful to the Uden team for helping make the day such a fitting tribute.Tom M. ★★★★★ Brilliant throughout the entire process. If the death is expected and occurs at home:

  • Contact the deceased’s doctor and inform them of the death
  • Once the doctor has given permission to move the deceased, you may contact us and we will aim to be with you within 1-2 hours, to move the person who has died into our care
  • The doctor will issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death to the family representative for registration purposes

If the death occurs at a Nursing Home:

  • If a resident dies in a nursing home the GP (or qualified nurse on duty) can verify death
  • The GP will issue a medical certificate for the family to collect which will allow them to register
  • Most nursing homes will record the resident’s funeral wishes on their care plan. This will specify the chosen Funeral Director and whether the deceased wanted a cremation or a burial.
  • Once called, we will remove the deceased into our care

If the death occurs in Hospital:

  • If death occurs at the hospital, then the Doctors and Nurses will liaise with the hospital Bereavement Office, who will arrange all the appropriate paperwork on your behalf.

In cases of sudden and unexpected death:

  • If a death is unexpected then dial 999 and request an ambulance and police immediately, explaining the circumstances. In the event of an unexpected death occurring, then a coroner may become involved and may order a post-mortem to be carried out to establish an accurate cause of death. The coroner’s officer will keep you informed should this be the case and will liaise with us.

In cases where the Coroner is required to investigate the death, the deceased will be taken to a hospital or mortuary until a post-mortem examination is completed. If the death is expected, the funeral director will collect the deceased from the place of death and transport them to the appropriate chapel of rest, pending the arrangement of the funeral. Many large companies have central mortuaries or “hubs” where they store the deceased.

Here at W. Uden & Sons, each of our funeral homes are equipped with their own chapel of rest and have fully hygienic facilities for the care of your loved one. The only exception to this is our Dulwich branch, which shares these facilities with our branch at Camberwell.

Yes, once the deceased’s death has been certified, call your local branch and our experienced staff will guide you through the process of arranging the funeral. The only exception is when the Coroner has indicated that he intends to hold a full inquest into the circumstances surrounded the death.
